The First Star has learned that there has been a non-union agreement in existence for a while in this hotel.

This agreement seems to get rid of penalty rates and replace it with a all-in-one pay rate for staff.

As part of the Accor chain, Novotel Brisbane has participated in Earth Hour and introduced a formula to determine how much savings can be made through towel re-use- pledging to donate part of these savings to the United Nation’s reforestation program.

Novotel was also the first hotel brand to undertake Green Globe certification in Pacific region. They are attempting to be the first hotel group in the region to be fully certified by Green Globe by June 2009.

However, as with every other hotel in this sector, guests need to ask if this is just greenwash or an authentic commitment to preserve the environment for future generations? This lack of a consistent, authoritative and transparent environmental rating system really means that no one can be sure if they’re being snowed by marketing or actually making a difference.

My chain is also on this bandwagon - Flat rate 7 days a week, no public holiday pay, only 5 hours in lieu. Doesn't seem very hospitable InterContinental, does it?

I love coming to work only to be told that i'm only doing 3hrs work. I travel 90 mins each way to get to work. By the time you take out the cost of fuel and parking it's not worth coming in for $26. I just want some job security for my family.
