The First Star has heard some pretty shocking stories of the poor treatment of kitchen staff during May of this year. During this month an older worker was told that “you have been sick, you should be casual” and told that he should change to casual. This worker told us that he believes it is to save the hotel paying out his long service leave.

Hey Tom, I am shocked too. Shocked by the way some employers treat their staff. Maybe you'd be more shocked if you bothered to look beyond the facade (and farce) of 5 star hotel operations.

I'd love this site develop more and include good news not just bad - so that we can look for hotels that are rated by first star as great hotels (in the way they treat staff etc). ALso international entries would be great - for example I'm staying at 'The Library' in New York in November and it would be great to know how they rate!

To 'Tom' This is a great website to let everyone know what all the Hospitality workers are feeling and experiencing. Yes we are all lucky to have jobs but if we are treated like servants then I would rather be unemployed.

rating hotels is a good good initiative

Just because this type of behaviour is ingrained in hospitality culture doesn't mean it's right or fair. Why shouldn't we applaud those who do the right thing?

Can we please do some hotels in Melbourne? I am constantly frustrated by my management!

I found this site searching for hotels, was quite shocked that the LHMU have spent their members money on a website that basically trashes the employer - what a waste of members money.
