Yet another hotel in the IHG group who gave staff just 7 days notice and then rushed them to vote on a WorkChoices agreement. The First Star has been told one word sums up the way many workers at the hotel feel. Fear.
Who would have thought that keeping staff perpetually running on adrenaline to ensure a five star experience for guests made workers feel cowed and insecure in their workplace?
Now here’s the problem with not having an authoritative, consistent and transparent green accreditation system for Australia’s luxury hotel sector. The Holiday Inn is part of the IHG hotel chain. As such we can assume it is part of the chain’s “new online sustainability system called Green Engage, which assists IHG general mangers across 4,000 hotels to manage hotel energy, water and waste consumption more effectively.”
That’s terrific, but what does it really mean and what does it produce and who makes it work and how does it impact on staff and community? This is not just an issue for the IHG chain; it is why we need a nationally recognized public accreditation system, so customers can compare apples with apples.
