Hilton Adelaide

Hilton Adelaide

At last some good news to report! The First Star understands Hilton Adelaide is holding out against pressure from Hilton International to deny their workers important rights at work. We think that is really a position to be applauded. They’re still a long way from achieving The First Star because they’re not actually actively addressing worker concerns – yet.

But it does look like the Hilton Adelaide is more focussed on “green initiatives” than its counterparts. Its sustainability fact sheet is worth checking out.

Aside, the Brassiere at the Hilton Adelaide has ‘celebrity chef’ Simon Bryant as its executive chef (he stars in the ABC series “The Cook and the Chef”). He was involved in the SA Department of Environment and Heritage environmental debate at its “stirring the possum” community debates – which are incidentally held in at the Hilton Adelaide.

He even recorded as message for the event which can be found here.

The Brassiere’s website also listed the following information as to why it is different from other employers:

What makes The Brassiere different from other employers?

  • Closed for lunch Saturday and Sundays
  • Located in the central CBD with easy access to transport & amenities
  • We look after you with great staff meals
  • Flexible and respectful roster
  • Company discounts when dining in our restaurants
  • Weekly direct deposit banking of your pay
  • Very experienced team led by celebrity chef, Simon Bryant
  • We are a fun happy team!

This is one hotel that appears to be moving in the right direction.

Let,s hope it,s real change and not just band aid solutions. The whole industry needs an overhaul.

The Hotel can occationally get things right or at least offer the guest something different. There is a proposal to have ethical stay overs where guest can hiring energy effecient cars or bicycles as part of their room package. The support they have given to the Panda bear enclosure at the Adelaide Zoo is great. This Hotel started a We care programme to get staff to recycle but provide cheap bins to seperate out the waste which have started breaking. No true assessment of time and energy studies as to how best achieve recycling targets staff are exspected to still make the chanding in their normal roster. Such a great idea in concept but as usual in practice corporate businesses just cannot help themselves its the Dollor or Marketing dollar that they care about. If management cared about staff don't they realise the would get so much more out of their staff done willingly. Talk to us ( staff ) a sucessful business is work for us better jobs ,better Hotels happier staff, even happier GUESTS.

Have high standards of Hilton moments for the quests but very little of reward for effort for back of house quests THE STAFF. High productivity, no extra time. expects staff to sign away their penaltys for overtime, working on Rostered Days Off. Then hassel them when they ring sick overworked. If the staff don't comply they give them less hours? We staff do a good job by supporting each other, not through the support of management. We care about leaking taps, using steam cleaning exquipment to save water rather than ask the guest to not have their room cleaned or bathtowels cleaned during their stay. All that does is save wage and opporational cost, not the enviroment. Fixing leaking taps would save more water and buying enery efficient laudry equipment rather than old machines that are always breaking down?

Hilton has a great reputation (thanks to its hard working staff)and a high media profile. Don,t judge a book by its cover. Staff in some departments are treated appallingly.

I have now left the Hilton due to the bullying of my supervisor. Note Hilton you don't keep good staff by bullying them.
